Construction Superintendent

Contract 

Summary:

Reporting to the Project Manager, the Construction Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and managing institutional and commercial construction projects. They work in collaboration with union members, contractors, project managers, and other stakeholders to ensure successful project completion while adhering to project specifications, safety standards, and trade union regulations.  The Construction Superintendent plays a vital role in coordinating and supervising all construction activities while promoting safety, efficient resource allocation, productivity, and high-quality workmanship.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and trade union representatives to develop project plans, schedules, and budgets.
  • Coordinate with various trade unions to ensure the availability of skilled labour, resolve any labour-related issues, and comply with union regulations.
  • Review project specifications, drawings, and contractual documents to ensure accurate interpretation and implementation.
  • Coordinate material deliveries, equipment rentals, and subcontractor activities to support project timelines and objectives.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to trade union crews and subcontractors, promoting a positive and productive work environment.
  • Assign tasks, set performance expectations, and provide guidance to trade union members to ensure adherence to project plans and quality standards.
  • Monitor and track construction progress, ensuring work is completed on schedule, within budget, and in compliance with safety regulations and trade union rules.
  • Promotes a culture of continuous improvement with safety performance and quality by going beyond satisfying the minimum legislated requirements, identifying opportunities for improvement, and providing recommendations to management team.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant codes, permits, licenses, company policies and trade union requirements throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Establish and maintain quality control measures, ensuring workmanship, materials, and installations meet project specifications, industry standards, and trade union guidelines.
  • Maintain accurate project documentation, including daily logs, progress reports, safety records, change orders, and as-built drawings.
  • Prepare regular reports for project managers, trade union representatives, and other stakeholders, providing updates on project status, productivity, and safety performance.
  • Collaborate with project managers on project closeout activities, including final inspections, punch lists, and documentation for turnover.

Job Specifications:

  • Extensive experience in construction supervision, preferably in an institutional and commercial multi-trade union environment.
  • Strong knowledge of trade union regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
  • Thorough understanding of construction methods, techniques, and best practices within the industrial sector.
  • Proficient in reading and interpreting construction plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and guide trade union members.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities to handle multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills to liaise with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in the construction industry.
  • Strong computer literacy in Microsoft Office (Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook,) and demonstrated knowledge of scheduling practices and software such as MS Project or Primavera P6 is an asset.
  • Must be willing to travel and work weekends to accommodate project schedules.
  • Must possess a valid Class - G Ontario Driver's License and clean driving record.
