Mining and Metals
AMEC/Detour Gold Corporation
Detour Lake Mine,
Cochrane, Ontario
In addition to the installation of the substation, TESC was engaged for the concrete slabs and equipment foundations required for the Detour Lake Mine in Northern Ontario. The project site was located approximately 185 km northeast of Cochrane, Ontario, via Highway 652. At the time, this provincial highway was paved for the first 140 km and gravel for the remaining distance.
When the original contractor failed to meet milestones, TESC assumed responsibility of the job and worked with the client to resolve challenges to keep the project on track. The scope of work for this project included the following: excavation/backfill, installation of concrete sump pit, site hoarding/fencing, earthwork, water pipe (marine work), placing & finishing, formwork, reinforcing steel, cast-in place concrete, grout, metal fabrications and insulation.
The team consisted of 60 carpenters who were required to stay on site in a camp, where they faced extreme winter weather conditions, such as minus 50-degree temperatures, while working on this project. To resolve the weather challenge, shelters, complete with heaters, were built and a mandatory requirement for all workers to wear proper winter apparel was established. Despite the harsh climate, the TESC team was able to meet deliverables with excellent craftmanship.
Respecting all safety requirements, the project was completed on time and on budget.
