Young Davidson Mine,
Matachewan, Ontario
As subcontractor, TESC completed the civil portion of the pad construction and headframe at Young Davidson Mine in Matachewan, located in Northern Ontario.
The work included the concrete tower walls, floors, reinforcing steel, anchor bolts, embedded steel, tower core steel, roof structural steel, skip guides, brattice panels, monorails and lifting lugs, conveyance arrestor steelwork, and tensioning deck steelwork. TESC was also responsible for the access platforms and doors, stairs, landings and handrails, guardrails, collar doors, gates, vent plenum, man-doors, overhead doors, stairwell enclosure at hoisting deck, penthouse structure, insulated wall system, roof deck, insulation, and membrane. Supply and installation of the hoist house was included.
The highly experienced TESC team included an in-house engineer; thus, the crew had the ability to resolve any construction challenges as they arose and managed to keep the project on track. To reduce costs and increase efficiency, weekly meetings were held to ensure proper planning was in place and to focus on project management methods that enabled continuous improvement. Additional work was required after the headframe was complete and to mitigate costs from lump sum, we changed the contract type to target price. This format allowed the client to save money and help alleviate some of the growing pains Northgate was experiencing as a small company.
This project was completed on schedule, within budget and with zero lost time injuries.
