SNC Lavalin/Vale Canada Ltd.
Vale Smelter,
Sudbury, Ontario
TESC was engaged by SNC Lavalin to install the new No. 8 converter at the Vale smelter in Copper Cliff, Ontario.
The scope of work included speed tile walls removal, all civil works (pilling, formwork, and concrete pours), all structural steel including platforms and structural shoring for the micro piles, the installation of the feed system including the flux and scrap bins, the installation of the feeders and transfer conveyor, the plough system, and the retractable feed chute.
TESC also completed the installation of the converter, primary and secondary duct work, primary and secondary hoods, spray chamber, sand floor baghouse, dust collection ductwork, control booth, cooling fans, power hookups and tie-ins. TESC was responsible for the fabrication and installation of all process piping systems, which included the installation of the 48” blast air line and all electrical and instrumentation installations.
In addition to realizing zero lost time injuries, the team successfully completed the above work in a live facility within the converter aisle footprint. The team also performed major engineered lifts above the smelter building with excellent coordination.
Due to the team’s strong communication skills, they realized minimal impact to the client’s operations throughout the entire project. Prior to departing the site, TESC provided support to facilitate commissioning and hand-over to client.
